Separately, beat butter and sugar until pale and creamy. Mix in lemon zest and vanilla extract. Add in the whisked egg yolks from the stand mixer and mix well. I did make a few changes I used a german chocolate cake mix and I used chocolate pudding.

Steps to make German Yellow Cake:
  1. For the Yellow Cake, Preheat oven to 375°.
  2. Grease and flour 2 - 9" cake pans.
  3. Cream butter and sugar. Add and mix the rest of the ingredients.
  4. Pour batter into cake pans. Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Check cake with a toothpick for doneness.
  5. If making a sheet cake, bake for 35-40 minutes.
  6. For the German Chocolate Icing.
  7. In saucepan, beat egg slightly. Stir in sugar, evaporated milk, salt, and butter.
  8. Cook over Medium heat, for about 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and bubbly.
  9. Stir in Coconut and Pecans. Cool.
  10. When cake and icing are cooled, frost both layers of cake, on the top. Then, layer.

I used another german chocolate frosting on this site and it was wonderful. Whisk the egg whites until stiff, stir a spoonful into the cake mixture and, when incorporated, fold in the remaining whites carefully and lightly using a large metal spoon.
