  9. Get 1 tablespoon Matcha Powder

Then. add the sifted dry ingredients to the liquid ingredients and blend until smooth. Matcha Mushipan have a beautiful green color and lots of candied beans are mixed in. The Japanese steamed cakes are made with very simple ingredients: flour (all-purpose flour or cake flour), baking powder, eggs, milk, sugar, and neutral-flavored oil (such as vegetable oil).

Instructions to make Steamed Matcha Cake:
  1. Line the base and sides of a cake tin with baking paper. *Note: You can use a Bamboo Steamer if you have one. Use a large sheet of baking paper to line.
  2. Note: You can make 4 to 6 small cakes using ramekins or mugs.
  3. Combine Eggs, Sugar, Milk, Condensed Milk (OR melted White Chocolate), melted Butter and Vanilla Extract in a bowl, sift in Self-Raising Flour and Matcha Powder, and mix well until smooth.
  4. Heat the steamer with enough water to steam for 30 minutes. *Note: Today I I used a pot and a flat steamer rack.
  5. Pour the cake mixture into the prepared cake tin, carefully place the tin into the steamer, cover with lid and cook for 30 minutes OR until cooked through. *Note: I recommend to wrap the lid with tea towel or large cloth, so that water won’t drip onto the cake.
  6. Enjoy the cake warm, though it’s still soft and tasty when cold.

While Chinese steamed bun called Mantou (饅頭) uses yeast as a leavening agent, Japanese steamed cakes use baking powder. These delicious Matcha Steamed Cakes are great as snack or as an accompaniment to tea-any kind of tea. They're steamed, so they're oil-free too! Cut a piece of parchment paper so that it fits the inside of the mold completely. Get "Mushi Nabe" ready according to the basic donabe steaming instructions.
